New Mexico’s Secretary of the Environment Speaks Out on PFAS Contamination

On July 22, 2025, the Secretary of the New Mexico Environment Department appeared on Episode 199 of New Mexico PBS’s New Mexico News Insiders Podcast to discuss per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and the impact of PFAS contamination in New Mexico. In the podcast, Secretary Kenney provides an overview of PFAS: what they are, and the ever-growing understanding of their adverse health effects, such as vaccine suppression. Secretary Kenney noted that New Mexico is “ground zero” for some PFAS issues nationally, primarily due to PFAS contamination at military bases resulting from the military’s use of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF)—the subject of several lawsuits between New Mexico and the United States where Kanner & Whiteley represents New Mexico and its Environment Department. Specifically, the Secretary discusses PFAS contamination at Cannon Air Force Base (which is a bellwether in the national MDL concerning AFFF litigation), and at Holloman Air Force Base (where PFAS contamination has been recorded at world-record levels).
